What does the Kia Soul start/stop system do?

I've noticed a button with an 'A' and 'N' on my Kia Soul's shifter. What is this for and how does it work?

The start/stop system automatically turns off the engine when you're idling and restarts it when you release the brake pedal. This helps reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
