Why is my Kia Picanto making strange noises when I turn on the AC?

I have noticed that when I turn on the AC in my Kia Picanto, there are strange noises coming from the engine. It sounds like a grinding or rattling noise and it only happens when the AC is on. What could be the cause of this and how can I fix it?
