Why is my Kia Sportage making a squealing noise when I brake?

I recently started hearing a loud squealing noise whenever I apply the brakes in my Kia Sportage. It seems to be coming from the front of the car, but I can't tell for sure. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

Hi Maria, the most likely cause of the squealing noise is worn out brake pads. If your brake pads are too thin, they can make a high-pitched sound when they come into contact with the rotor. I recommend taking your car to a mechanic and having them inspect your brakes. They can replace the brake pads if necessary.

It's possible that the noise is coming from a loose or damaged brake caliper. This can cause the brake pads to vibrate against the rotor and create a squealing sound. I suggest having a mechanic check your calipers and tighten or replace them if needed.

Another potential cause of the noise could be a worn or cracked belt in the engine. If the belt is slipping or damaged, it can produce a high-pitched sound that may be mistaken for a brake issue. You should have a mechanic inspect your belt and replace it if necessary.
