How do I troubleshoot a faulty steering system in my Kia Soul?

I've been having issues with my Kia Soul's steering system. The wheel feels loose and the car drifts to one side when I'm driving. I want to fix it myself, but I'm not sure where to start. Can you offer any advice?

First, check the power steering fluid. If it's low, top it up and see if the problem persists. If not, you may need to replace the power steering pump. If the fluid level is fine, check for any leaks in the steering system. A common culprit is the steering rack and pinion, so inspect that closely. If you're not comfortable with these repairs, it's best to take your Kia Soul to a certified mechanic.

Another thing to consider is the condition of your tires. Improperly inflated or worn tires can cause steering issues. Check the tire pressure and tread depth and make sure they're within the recommended range for your Kia Soul. If they're not, adjust accordingly or replace them.

If you've recently hit a pothole or curb, it's possible that your alignment is off. This can cause the symptoms you're experiencing. Take your Kia Soul to a reputable alignment shop to have it checked and adjusted if necessary. It's a quick and relatively inexpensive fix.
