Why is the Kia ProCeed's fuel efficiency so low?

I recently purchased a Kia ProCeed and I have noticed that it consumes a lot of fuel. I have tried driving it conservatively and have kept up with regular maintenance, so I am not sure why the fuel efficiency is poor. Any suggestions on how I can improve it?
